When budding local entrepreneur and original founder, Jimmy Joannou returned from Canada in 1967, he embarked on a new business venture using his newly acquired skill for turning scrap rims into hand-crafted custom wheels. This newfound interest quickly turned profitable when he started Tiger Speed Den, an accessory shop, with friend and business partner, Dennis Cohen. As the business progressed, Tiger Speed Den was eventually relocated to larger premises on Mint Road, Fordsburg, incorporating manufacturing with retail and spray-painting services. Less than 10 years later in 1972, South African race car driver, Eddie Keizan bought the company for R14,000 and went on to become the head of Tiger Wheel & Tyre, as it’s known today.
