The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu is one of the three National Orthopaedic Hospitals in Nigeria. It is strategically located to serve about a third of Nigerians population residing in the eastern and southern flank of Nigeria.  National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu, the known healthcare organization that combines effective, proven research, cutting-edge procedures and state-of-the-art treatment to produce optimum medical and lifestyle outcomes for our patients. Our hospital and medical staff provide world-class, innovative orthopaedic care in a friendly, compassionate, community environment conducive to patient recuperation in a family atmosphere. The East Central State government led by Mr. Ukpabi Asika, as Administrator/Chief Executive, at the end of Nigerian Civil war, established a hospital for maimed war victims. Named after Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia for his mediating role in the civil war, as Haile SelassieI Instituite of Orthopaedic, Plastic and Ophthalmic Surgery it was to offer services in these surgical specialties. The old Governor's lodge was then converted into a hospital with over 200 acres of land set aside for its development. The Ophthalmic section of the Hospital was relocated before the functional take off of the Hospital. The hospital was opened to the public with the first intake of patients on 17th January 1975. The formal opening by Mrs. Victoria Gowon took place on 4th April 1975.  The state government that came into office in July 1975 renamed the Hospital "State Orthopaedic Hospital" while it became National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu following its take over by the Federal Government in 1976. The act establishing the Hospital came into force in September 1979 and provided for its management with the other two National Orthopaedic Hospitals located in Lagos and Kano by the Orthopaedic Hospitals Management Board

AiBST is a hybrid institute with elements of tertiary academic institutions and biomedical R&D companies to enable it to operate in an environment which still requires capacity and capability building with respect to skilled manpower and research infrastructure, at the same time be translational research oriented to deliver on medical products and services that address Africa’s healthcare challenges. Our ultimate aim is to deliver life transforming healthcare solutions. The governance bodies of the African Institute of Biomedical Science and technology (AiBST) comprise the Board of Directors (BD), the Academic and the R&D Committee (ARDC), the International Advisory Board (IAB) and the Management Committee (MC). The BD is composed of the directors under whom the institute is registered. The BD meets once a month. The ARDC is composed of all Professors , Directors and Associate Directors at AiBST. The ARDC meets 4 times a year to discuss and make recommendations for AiBST’s research focus in response to medical needs and international standards. The IAB is composed of experts of international standing in diverse fields of expertise of importance to the strategic development of AiBST. The IAB meets once a year at AiBST but has at least 4 teleconferences a year. The MC is composed of the President and Chief Scientific Officer, the Managing Director of Administration & Finance, The Directors of Molecular Sciences and Medical Bioanalytics. The MC is responsible for the overall management of AiBST and it meets once a week. The whole governing body meat once a year at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) where major changes (Change of Board members, and appointments (Manager and Associated Director level appointments upwards) are made or officially endorsed as stipulated in the institute’s constitution. Healthcare in Africa AiBST was founded in 2002 by Professor Collen Masimirembwa. Its initial were the organisation of courses on the science and technology of drug discovery and development. The first course was in Cape Town (South Africa) in 2002 and focused on ADMET for drug discovery. The second one was in Nairobi (Kenya) in 2003 focusing on Pharmacogenetics of Drug Metabolism. The courses generated tremendous interest among African scientists resulting in them forming the African Society for Drug Metabolism and Development (ASDMD) at the meeting in Cape Town and the African Pharmacogenomics Consortium at the meeting in Nairobi. AiBST demonstrated a viable interface African researchers and international academics and industrialists could work together to establish capacity for biopharmaceutical R&D in Africa. With support from pharmaceutical companies such as AstraZeneca, Novartis, and Merck, funding organizations such as WHO-TDR, CDC(Atlanta), ISP, EDCTP, NIH, SANBIO, BfArM and TWAS, AiBST established state-of- the-art biomedical research laboratories and a Phase I Clinical Trial Unit in Zimbabwe.AiBST has now established itself as both a pioneer and champion in the fields of Genomic and Pharmaceutical Medicine, Forensic Science and Molecular Diagnostics. It also has a vibrant postgraduate training program at Masters and PhD level which innovatively uses a Global Faculty of experts from academia and industry to produce the next generation of African biomedical scientists. Research scientists at AiBST have won many national, regional and international awards for their innovations. This is making it the partner of choice for regional and international universities and biomedical companies wishing to tackle the most challenging biomedical research question in Africa or wishing to deploy innovative solutions on the African continent.

Kumi Hospital is a Private Not For Profit (PNFP) facility located in eastern Uganda, 300 km from Kampala. It is a rural hospital, which transformed from a leprosy centre to a general hospital in 1997. The Hospital was founded by the Church Missionary Society in 1929 as a leprosarium in response to the need for specialised work among leprosy patients. Dr. Wiggins recognised this in 1927 after Sir Albert Cook had already treated many leprosy patients in 1909. For many leprosy sufferers then, Kumi Leprosy Centre became the only place where they could live in community without being rejected, despised and discriminated. The disease leprosy then had a high social stigma, very deforming and had no hope of cure. The only available treatment then was to hydnocarpus Oil injection (chulmoogra oil) an old Indian remedy. A clinical improvement was only attained in Tuberculoid leprosy but only temporary improvement in Lepromatous leprosy. In the 1950s the Sulphones were introduced and the treatment became easier, several leprosy treatment villages were built with the help of the local administrations of Teso, Lango, Bukedi, Sebei, Acholi and Karamoja. In 1952 a Leprosy Assistants Training School was started to train Leprosy Assistants. In the seventies, with the change of attitude, a move was made to stop segregation. Leprosy treatment villages were closed including Wiggins Boarding School) and Leprosy Control was integrated into the Medical service. In 1983 the cure for Leprosy was found to be Multi Drug Therapy (MDT). Over the years the Leprosy centre provided much noted care for Leprosy sufferers, care, treatment and rehabilitation. The years 1985 – 1992 were years of conflict, which engulfed the Teso region. This Hospital suffered total collapse both in infrastructure and services due to the war. By the end of the war in 1992, the Hospital lay in a sorry state, vandalised and turned into a Camp for IDP’s. The water-carrying infrastructure was also vandalized and so was the Farm that was looted of over 1000 heads of cattle. The hospital still bears the scars and the legacy of that dark period. Since 1997,Kumi Leprosy centre by resolutions of the Board transformed to a General Hospital now Kumi Hospital. The Hospital has since then undergone major structural development, upgrading of facilities and infrastructure To date the Hospital has grown to a 350-bed capacity providing a wide range of integrated services including Medical, surgical, rehabilitative, Primary health care, Community Based rehabilitation programmes and other specialised services such as AMREF Flying Doctor service offers VVF repairs and Reconstructive surgery. The Hospital also maintains a referral status for leprosy and TB in Eastern Uganda. Kumi Hospital has now established itself as a preferred destination for the poor, for those who have not been reached, a centre for hope, healing and wholeness bearing witness to Christ.
