Once British colony, since its independence (more than fifty years ago) Ghana has been one of the few politically stable realities in Africa, currently aimed to a robust development process thanks to its natural resources: gold (Ghana was once known as the "Golden Coast"), manganese and, recently, oilfields. From the agricultural point of view Ghana is one of the world's major importers for cocoa (the world's best quality), valuable timber, rubber, etc. English is the national language and its diffusion made the cohabitation among different ethnic groups easier, also considering that still nowadays each group has its own language (Ahanta, Fanti, and so on). Twi language, too, is still spoken (and taught at schools) by more than 7 millions inhabitants. Busua is a small fishing village in the Western Region; thanks to its marvellous beach it has become one of the most renowned resorts in Ghana. You will still find a lively fishing community and various kinds of accommodations, ranging from cheap 'chop bars' to the expensive restaurants and hotels.

The British Air Force built Planter’s Lodge for their flying officers in 1934 in Takoradi, in the Western Region of Ghana. It was later sold to a British company who used it as a hotel. Takoradi was the only harbour at that time in Ghana and British Overseas Airways Corporation had just a few flights from the capital, Accra, so almost anyone who travelled outside Ghana came to Takoradi to take the Elder Dempster vessels to Europe. A lot of people, children going to school, local business men and expatriates going on leave all stayed at the hotel and to this day, people still come to the hotel and reminisce about their journey by sea. A great part of the hotel has presently been restored. Even though Planter’s Lodge is an African colonial fusion concept, the colonial buildings have been maintained and the ‘new’ addition is the swimming pool and the Bamboo Conservatory Bar. Planter's Lodge is set in six acres of beautifully landscaped gardens. The Takoradi Golf Course (which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean) is a few minutes walk away and arrangements have been made so our guests can have a round of golf at their leisure, likewise a gym (this is a few minutes walk away), which our guests can also use. Takoradi is situated in the Western Region of Ghana. The Western Region is famous for having the best beaches in Ghana and some of the finest tourist sites. The forts and castles that Ghana is famous for is barely an hour's drive away from Planter's Lodge. Planter's Lodge is in Takoradi, and is set in Beach Road, which is the most sought after residential area. Our location offers guests a peaceful and tranquil setting even though the hotel is a few minutes drive away from the city. British Airways awarded Kakum Forest Reserve a Heritage Award a few years ago. Due to the large and privileged surroundings Planter's Lodge is set in, we are able to offer our guests a unique range of rooms, suites and private bungalows to suit all your requirements. There are six bungalows on the estate and each one is divided into two private suites. All the suites have been carefully restored with teak parquet in the living rooms and bedrooms. In addition the suites are equipped with large colonial style beds and living room furniture to enhance the comfort of your stay. There are also twenty double garden rooms on the premises flanking the main building to the left and right hand side. Our rooms and suites have complimentary tea and coffee making facilities and are equipped with all the mod cons including wireless internet facilities. The completion of our six executive suites represents a landmark in the history of the hotel. This is positioned on top of the rain forest and lends itself to breathtaking panoramic views of the jungle below. Again, this is one hour, fifteen minutes drive away from the hotel and not far from the forts and castles. The 'village in the lake' is Nzulezu. This is a two hour drive from Takoradi. Stephen, a local guide who looks after our guests, will take you in his canoe to the village. A gift of a bottle of schnapps is quite customary for the chief of Nzulezu who will regale you with stories of how the villagers came to settle 'in the water'. Our chef will pack you a picnic of lovely 'cold chop' if he is given advance notice. We recommend you drive to Ankobra Beach Resort for your lunch (they will allow you to do so if you buy a few cold beers) after your sojourn to Nzulezu.
