Raw Material Procurement: Fishing Boats, Fish Landing Sites, Transport Trucks The company owns a large fleet of fishing and transport boats for collecting raw material. Uganda Fish Packers also has its own approved fish landing sites, under the direct supervision of Department of Fisheries' Resources. To have complete control over the supply chain and product traceability, the company registers and trains all subagents and fishermen. Processing Plant: Uganda Fish Packers Ltd. has a well-designed processing facility, which meets the requirements of the European Union council directives, and the standards set by the fish quality assurance rules of Uganda. The processing steps in the factory are as follows: Raw Material Reception and Washing: This is a critical control point, and the quality control staff thoroughly check the source and inspect the raw material. Trimming and Washing: Fillets are trimmed according to product specification.. Temporary Storage: Uganda Fish Packers' raw material chill room has a 50-ton capacity for intermediate storage. Filleting and Skinning: The company has a very well arranged manual filleting line, staffed with well-trained and experienced employees. Grading and Weighing: Raw material is weighed as per standard grades. Setting: Fillets are arranged in freezer trays. Freezing/Chilling: Uganda Fish Packers has two plate freezers and two blast freezers for chilling or freezing products. The total production capacity of the plant is 80 tons of raw materials per day. Packing: Products are packed in paper cartons (frozen products) or styrofoam boxes as per product specifications. Shipment: By air or by sea The Nile Perch (Lates Niloticus) is the largest freshwater fish in the world, and can grow to more than 230 kilograms (500 lbs). It is wonderfully sweet, firmly textured, highly nutritious, virtually odorless, and rich in trace nutrients. Nile Perch also contains one of the highest levels of omega 3 fatty acids (700mg/100 grams), which studies suggest can help to reduce the risk of heart disease. The source of all raw material used by Uganda Fish Packers is Lake Victoria, the second largest freshwater lake in the world.
