Our glory days were between the 1960′s and the early 1980′s, thanks to government backing and a very favourable international environment, when the price of tea, as a sought-after commodity, experienced several successive increases. However, the end of the 1980′s reveals an opposite trend and government is forced to subsidise this struggling sector of the economy. 1994 witnesses a decisive turn for the local industry, when government, which owned most of the factories, decides to disengage from tea production, as it was no longer competitive on the London market. The landscape of the island's high ground changes as many tea plantations make way for sugar cane fields. Nowadays, there are 680 hectares of tea plantations in Mauritius. Virtues of Tea "Tea awakens wise humours and thoughts. It refreshes the body and calms the spirit. If you are discouraged, tea will restore your strength." – Emperor Chen-Nung One day of the year 2737 BC, when the Chinese emperor Cheng-Nung was resting under a tree, some tea leaves, floating on the wind, fell into his cup of hot water. The water soon turned an amber colour. The emperor tasted it and was immediately filled with an ineffable feeling of well-being. Thus was tea born. This imperial beverage is reputed for its innumerable virtues. Since times immemorial, Chinese medicine has used tea leaves in the manufacture of remedies. Its anti-oxidant and phenolic properties, reinforced by the action of its components – catechins, caffeine, theanine, among others – make tea a preventive drink. It protects against various illnesses: cancer, cholesterol, cardiovascular diseases… One could even speak of Tea-rapy! Its popularity spread to the West, where Europeans discovered for themselves this concentrate of goodness. In 1680, the Countess of Bedford instituted the "five o'clock tea" in England. Tea is served with small cakes and scones. This ritual is the moment to spend some time in good company and to share treats. More than a drink, tea nourishes and restores the spirit. It stimulates body and soul. From hot, tea became an iced drink, thirst quenching and refreshing. With time, it became flavoured, a subtle balance between its natural benefits and a fresh fruity taste. A real pleasure for the palate and the body.

Hangana Seafood operates a wet-fish factory in Walvis Bay. We have our own jetty, ice plant, processing and storage facilities. The factory is equipped with advanced technology that includes Marel software (which records and monitors production processes like input and yield), an Intelligent Portioning Machine (IPM), an auto plate freezer, and a freezing tunnel for individual quick-frozen (IQF) requirements. The raw material is normally discharged and sorted in our sorting and grading area, and then distributed to the factory for processing. The factory's labour complement is 700, of which 60% are permanent employees. Peak fishing season normally occurs between January and May, while the low season is from June to December. An October closure has been introduced by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources as a protective measure, as this is the main spawning season of the white hake. The factory is European Union-approved by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS), which is known as Global Conformity Services in Namibia, as well as being certified by the British Retail Consortium (BRC). The facilities are inspected regularly, and audited annually for HACCP and BRC certification. The land-based factory has a daily capacity of between 55t and 70 t throughput of hake, depending on the size of the fish and the targeted product mix. The Hangana Seafood premises measure 57,000 m2. The area has a concrete jetty with a length of 100 m, as well as a 60-m wooden pier. The main factory building measures 6,500 m2. The raw material store has a holding capacity of 120 t for ungraded raw material. The processing area is equipped with four processing lines, all specialised for hake. All the processing lines are controlled by an automatic registration system (Marel). There are nine plate freezers with a combined capacity of 40 t per day, as well as three blast freezers with a combined capacity of 27 t per day. Two cold stores, together measuring 750 m2, have a combined holding capacity of up to 450 t of final product. The factory management comprises a Factory Director, a Production Manager, and a Logistics Manager.
